Joint British-French Air Strike Strikes Daesh Weapons Depot in the Syrian region
Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
