The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
