Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.
The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to question specific calls made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
